The Guest House

This being human is a Guest House.

Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
Each may be clearing you out
for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
Meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

This poem conveys the secret purpose hidden in the suffering that finds us, no matter what that suffering is. Our journey in life comes with “homework” and can take a lifetime of learning to complete. The assignments start showing up in all sorts of life circumstances. Some are pleasant surprises and others just knock us off our course. When we get off course in the form of trying to soothe ourselves with addictive habits, anxiety, depression, illness, a loss of heart, a sense of helplessness, or hopelessness; it is really the wake-up call of that guide from beyond. Healing is about returning to our course.

The process of healing is as unique to each of us as our own individuality. When entering medical school, I thought it would teach me to fix people’s problems and that was healing. It was a naive view on so many levels albeit a logical assumption. While everything I learned during my training was intricately complex, it felt far from healing most of the time and more like a band-aid. There was both a curiosity and a sense of helplessness that inspired a devotion to learning about as many healing modalities as I could from Ayurveda, Five Element Acupuncture, to Spiritual Healing. I discovered my deep longing to understand the dimensions of our being as it related to illness. My offering is at the intersection of these traditions and attempts to transmit their wisdom. Essential to this is acknowledging that we have an internal capacity to heal ourselves.

Our work together is about empowering this intrinsic capacity for healing. It is a process of self discovery and empowerment to start shedding the habits, negative feelings, and unsupportive beliefs that are making us sick and frustrating our lives. All the healing traditions reveal particular aspects of our individual architecture and can be effective when we are ready for them, when we are able to truly meet what hurts us most. My commitment is to be a co-architect in your healing design. To walk with you, supporting you physically, emotionally, energetically and spiritually in your most vulnerable areas until they transform into your greatest strengths and lead you to those new delights.
